- V VISCACHA & friends meeting
Dear colleagues,
We are pleased to announce that the V VISCACHA & friends meeting will take place at Universidad de La Serena, La Serena, Chile from 1-6 September 2024.
The VISCACHA survey (http://www.astro.iag.usp.br/~viscacha/) is an ongoing scientific project involving researchers from Chile, Brazil, Argentina, México, United States and Poland, aimed at studying star clusters in the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds (LMC and SMC), using SOAR and Gemini-S telescopes. The past four editions of the meeting occurred in a format reserved only for VISCACHA members. This year, we want to open the doors and extend our invitation to the general academic public. This edition is also special since it will be our first meeting held in Chile.
The meeting is planned to have talks (no posters) and one or two round table discussions during the first three days (open to the general academic public) and sprint sessions the last two days (reserved for members of the collaboration). The first half of the event will have invited and contributed talks from VISCACHA members and other international scientists, covering topics such as:
-Chemical evolution of the Magellanic Clouds
-Structure and dynamics of the Magellanic Clouds
-Stellar and star cluster evolution
-Interaction of the Magellanic Clouds with the Milky Way
We have also organized a visit to Cerro Pachón, where the telescopes are situated, and a closing "Star Party" on Friday night to observe the Magellanic Clouds.
Below you will find more relevant information. Do not hesitate to write to us if you have any questions.
I hope to see you in La Serena!!!
Celeste Parisi, on behalf of the LOC.

Dear Colleagues,
We are pleased to announce the workshop "Deciphering the Cosmic Code for Galaxy Formation" in Puerto Varas, Chile, on 9-13 December 2024.
The workshop will bring together observational and numerical researchers working on galaxy formation and evolution to discuss successes, problems and new perspectives to advance the understanding of how galaxies formed and evolved in different environments. The workshop will focus on the following topics:
Recycled gas and metals within galaxies and between galaxies and their environment.
SN, AGN and other possible sources of feedback, especially at high redshifts, and their role in regulating star formation activity over time.
Fossils of galaxy assembly: from stellar halos to intracluster light.
The evolution of stellar populations and galaxy morphologies over time and in different environments.
The invited speakers are V. Avila-Reese, L. Bignone, S. Bonolli (TBC), V. Bromm (TBC), S. Cheng, S. Ellison, F. Fragkoudi, G. , C. Frenk (TBC), R. Grand, Kauffmann, T. Naab, S. Pedrosa, V. Springel, and S.White.
We are aiming for no more than 80 participants in order to create a motivating and relaxed atmosphere that encourages discussion among participants, including students and senior researchers.
Registration and abstract submission will be open until 30 May 2024. All relevant information, including deadlines and registration process, can be found HERE (www.evolgal4d.com/dcc).

- Physics of Extreme Massive Stars conference
Dates: 24/06/2024-28/06/2024
Location: Observatório Nacional, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
Description:
Massive stars are extreme cosmic engines, enriching their environments with chemically processed material throughout their entire life-time, and triggering star and planet formation. Despite their importance to cosmic evolution, the evolutionary path leading up to the death of massive stars as spectacular supernova explosions or to the formation of gravitational wave sources are most uncertain. One reason is certainly the lack of precise knowledge of the physical mechanisms behind mass-loss and eruptions.
The goal of the Physics of Extreme Massive Stars conference is to bring together scientists working in a range of subjects related to massive star research. It is the final conference of the European funded POEMS collaboration. It will address the processes that trigger mass loss in massive stars during extreme phases of their evolution, the study of the environments of massive stars on small and large scales and their binarity. During the past decade new cutting-edge numerical codes have been developed and used to compute grids of models describing the chemical and dynamical evolution of stars and their winds. At the same time, an avalanche of new data from different observatories using a diversity of observational techniques (both from satellite missions and from ground-based facilities) has been provided to the astronomical community leading to ground-breaking discoveries.
The main topics of the conference include:
- Winds of massive stars
- Fundamental parameters, chemical composition, and stellar classification
- Stellar pulsations and pulsation-triggered mass-loss
- Circumstellar environments of massive stars
- Evolution of massive stars and their transition phases
- Binarity in massive stars
- The final fate of massive stars
- Databases and their applications for massive star research.
The format of the conference will be a series of invited talks, contributed talks, and poster presentations. We have the following confirmed invited speakers: Alex Carciofi (Brazil), Lydia Cidale (Argentina), Yanina Cochetti (Argentina), Michel Curé (Chile), Michalis Kourniotis (Czech Republic), Alex Lobel (Belgium), Olga Maryeva (Czech Republic), René Oudmaijer (UK), and Andreas Sander (Germany).
For more information, please see the conference webpage.
Looking forward to welcoming you at our conference in Rio de Janeiro!
